Inspector General
The Office of the Inspector General is comprised of various units
responsible for the overall policing of the prison system through
criminal, administrative and background investigations, intelligence
gathering, prison audits and policy, and maintenance of fire and
safety standards. The units in this bureau include the Criminal
Investigations Unit, Administrative Investigations Unit, Security
Threat Group (STG), Special Operations Unit, Background
Investigations Unit, Audit and
Policy Unit, and Safety & Environmental Services Unit.
The Criminal Investigations Unit is responsible for investigation of
all crimes that occur within the state’s prisons, as well as
investigations of inmate protective segregation cases.
The Administrative Investigations Unit handles all internal
investigations comprised of investigations of alleged inappropriate
behavior by department employees.
The
Security Threat Group Unit collects information and intelligence
on prison gang members and validates inmates as being members of
prison gangs.
The Special Operations Unit coordinates assistance to other law
enforcement agencies in the areas of gang activity investigation,
fugitive arrests and crime suppression. It also assesses threats on
department employees and provides protection whenever necessary.
The Background Investigations Unit is responsible for pre-employment
background checks of newly hired or reinstated correctional
officers, as well as others persons who may be performing work
within the prisons.
The Audit and Policy Unit develops and distributes written
instructions which provide clear operational direction and guidance
to staff. In furtherance of the instructions, operational audits and
evaluations of agency performance are conducted by the unit to
insure that staff are both knowledgeable of department policies and
proficient in the exercise of their core competencies.
The Safety and Environmental Services Unit
ensures state and federal
fire and safety standards are maintained in the prisons, and
monitors workers’ compensation, property and vehicle losses within
the department.
